An integrated model platform for the economic assessment of agricultural policies in the European Union AgEcon
Perez Dominguez, Ignacio; Gay, Stephan Hubertus; M'Barek, Robert.
A number of economic models have been applied to analyse the Common Agricultural Policy. The partial equilibrium models CAPRI, ESIM, AGLINK, AGMEMOD and CAPSIM and the general equilibrium models GLOBE and GTAP are currently integrated in a modelling platform for Agro-Economic Policy Analysis in the premises of the Joint Research Centre in Seville in close collaboration with Directorate- General for Agriculture and Rural Development. Each of the models included has a specific focus, enlarging the capacity for complex policy analysis within this platform. This can be done by comparing the results of different models or by linking them, where several methodological options are available. This paper gives some insights on current applications in the field of...

Analysis of Participatory Research Projects in the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center AgEcon
Lilja, Nina K.; Bellon, Mauricio R..
Through a survey of scientists from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in 2004, this study assessed the extent to which participatory methods had been used by the center, how they were perceived by the scientists, and how participatory research could be applied more effectively by CIMMYT and partners. Results for 19 CIMMYT projects suggest among other things that participatory approaches at the center were largely “functional”—that is, aimed at improving the efficiency and relevance of research—and had in fact added value to the research efforts. The authors suggest that CIMMYT should (1) create a more conducive environment for scientists to share experiences on such approaches and (2) better document their impacts on farmers’...

Competitivity of the common-bean plant relative to the weed alexandergrass [Brachiaria plantaginea (link) hitch.] Scientia Agricola
Passini,Telma; Christoffoleti,Pedro Jacob; Yada,Inês Fumiko Ubukata.
Methodologies of competitive interaction quantification between weeds and crops are not widely elucidated and compared in the literature. The competitive ability of common-bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) relative to alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea) was assessed and two approaches of replacement series experiment analysis were compared. The response of the species to the presence of each other at different densities and proportion was evaluated. Replacement series at total densities of 625, 816 and 1,111 plants m-2 were performed at the proportions of common-bean:alexandergrass of 100:0 (pure stand of common-bean), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100% (pure stand of alexandergrass), at four replicates in a randomized block design. Data analyses were performed by...

Diagnosis and quantitative detection of HSV DNA in samples from patients with suspected herpes simplex encephalitis BJID
Ziyaeyan,Mazyar; Alborzi,Abdolvahab; Haghighi,Afshin Borhani; Jamalidoust,Marziyeh; Moeini,Mahsa; Pourabbas,Bahman.
Diagnosis of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is based on the detection of herpes simplex virus (HSV) DNA in patients' CSF samples. HSV DNA quantitation has the potential for estimating the effects of antiviral therapy. The aim of this study was to diagnose HSV DNA in HSE suspected patients and the quantitative analysis of its genome using real-time PCR to assess the value of the viral load in the course of antiviral treatment. The CSF samples were collected from 236 consecutive HSE suspected patients from November 2004 to May 2008. Upon DNA extraction, the samples were analyzed by Real-Time PCR assay. A set of primers amplified a common sequence of HSV glycoprotein B gene. The copy numbers of unknown samples were expressed via a standard curve drawn with...

EMPIRICAL MEASUREMENT OF CREDIT RATIONING IN AGRICULTURE: A METHODOLOGICAL SURVEY AgEcon
Petrick, Martin.
Empirical analysis of rural credit market failure has been of key scientific and political interest in recent years. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of various methods for measuring credit rationing of farms employed in the literature. Furthermore, based on a common analytical framework entailing a formal model of a credit rationed farm household, the methods are subjected to a comparative evaluation of their specific strengths or shortcomings. Six approaches are distinguished: measurement of loan transaction costs, analysis of qualitative information collected in interviews, analysis of quantitative information collected in interviews by using the credit limit concept, analysis of spill-over effects with regard to secondary credit sources,...

Grassland vegetation sampling - a practical guide for sampling and data analysis Acta Botanica
Andrade,Bianca Ott; Boldrini,Ilsi Iob; Cadenazzi,Monica; Pillar,Valério D.; Overbeck,Gerhard Ernst.
ABSTRACT Grassland and savanna ecosystems are the original vegetation types of more than 30% of the Brazilian territory, but conservation and training of future professionals has largely focused on forests. In fact, no standard protocols exist for sampling grassland vegetation for environmental planning or licensing. Neglecting non-forest ecosystems may have deleterious consequences for the maintenance of biodiversity and the provisioning of ecosystem services. Herein, we provide practical guidelines on how to conceive and develop ecological studies of grassland vegetation for scientific, monitoring or technical purposes. Using examples mostly from southern Brazil, we explain and discuss the various components of the research process, from the question to...

Quantificação da respiração e de etileno em vegetais por cromatografia gasosa com detectores em série. Infoteca-e
FRIGHETTO, R. T. S.; TERAO, D.; SASAKI, F. F. C.; CERQUEIRA, T. S..

Quantification of anti-nutritional factors and their correlations with protein and oil in soybeans Anais da ABC (AABC)
BUENO,RAFAEL D.; BORGES,LEANDRO L.; GOD,PEDRO I.V. GOOD; PIOVESAN,NEWTON D.; TEIXEIRA,ARLINDO I.; CRUZ,COSME DAMIÃO; BARROS,EVERALDO G. DE.
ABSTRACT Soybeans contain about 30% carbohydrate, mainly consisting of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and oligosaccharides. NSP are not hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract of monogastric animals. These NSP negatively affect the development of these animals, especially the soluble fraction. This work aimed to establish a method to quantify NSP in soybeans, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and to estimate correlations between NSP, oligosaccharides, protein and oil. Sucrose, raffinose + stachyose, soluble and insoluble NSP contents were determined by HPLC. Oil and protein contents were determined by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The soluble PNAs content showed no significant correlation with protein, oil, sucrose and raffinose...

Quantitative analysis by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence by the transmission method applied to geological samples Scientia Agricola
Simabuco,S.M.; Nascimento Filho,V.F..
Three certified samples of different matrices (Soil-5, SL-1/IAEA and SARM-4/SABS) were quantitatively analysed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence with radioisotopic excitation. The observed errors were about 10-20% for the majority of the elements and less than 10% for Fe and Zn in the Soil-5, Mn in SL-1, and Ti, Fe and Zn in SARM-4 samples. Annular radioactive sources of Fe-55 and Cd-109 were utilized for the excitation of elements while a Si(Li) semiconductor detector coupled to a multichannel emulation card inserted in a microcomputer was used for the detection of the characteristic X-rays. The fundamental parameters method was used for the determination of elemental sensitivities and the irradiator or transmission method for the correction of the...
